inkling is made by Allograph, Inc. This describes exactly what the app does with what you write. It is short because the app collects very little.
There is no account
You are never asked for a name, an email address, or a password. We do not know who you are, and we have no way to contact you.
What stays on your device
Everything you draw and write is stored on your iPhone and is not uploaded to us. Your pages, your sketches, and the record of your sessions live in the app's own storage and are deleted when you delete the app.
What leaves your device, and when
When you pause after writing, the app sends a picture of the relevant part of your page — and the text of anything you circled — to our server, which passes it to Anthropic's Claude API to be answered. If you ask for a picture panel, the description is passed to Google's Gemini API in the same way. We send nothing else, and nothing is sent unless you have written something and paused.
If you use the microphone, speech is transcribed on your device. The audio is never uploaded.
What our server keeps
- An anonymous device identifier from Apple's App Attest, which proves the request came from a real copy of inkling. It is not your Apple ID and cannot identify you.
- One row per answered turn: the identifier, which model answered, how many tokens it used, and what it cost. This is how the daily limit and the spending ceiling work.
We do not store the contents of your page, your questions, or the answers you receive.
Who else is involved
- Anthropic — answers the page.
- Google — draws picture panels, when you ask for one.
- Fly.io — runs our server.
There is no analytics service, no advertising, and no tracking of any kind. We do not sell or share anything, because there is nothing to sell.
Children
inkling is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them.
